Stroke Data and Audit
An effective system for capturing and analysing information about a service is essential to understand how well the service is functioning and to establish the impact of changes and proposed improvements. This page is a resource for understanding national data and using data at a local level. A number of national stroke data requirements originate from several national organisations. Below are the links to further information about these data and about the Accelerating Stroke Improvement measures.
Accelerating Stroke Improvement (ASI)
At the Stroke Public Accounts Committee on 24 February 2010, the Department of Health committed the NHS to an accelerated programme of improvement in stroke services for 2010/11 to address areas of the National Stroke Strategy highlighted by the National Audit Office report in 2009 as needing greater focus to support improvement. This programme, known as Accelerating Stroke Improvement, developed nine measures to enable tracking of progress in these key areas.
• ASI measures 2010-2012
• ASI measures - full operational definitions 2011-12 [published 01 April 2011]
• ASI measures collection template - this template is for networks to submit their progress towards the ASI measures and has been developed to improve the consistency of the national collection of ASI data. Completed templates should be sent to ASIdata@improvement.nhs.uk.

Measuring for local improvement
This section, originally published in our Going up a Gear: practical steps to improve stroke care document, provides information for local teams on why you should measure, what you should measure and top tips for collecting data to demonstrate benefits of improvements.
Case studies
We are keen to share case studies on effective data collection systems and how sites deal with the challenges of recording and collating stroke data . If you have a case study you would like to share, please contact Sarah Gillham.
