National Projects 2010-11
In response to the Public Accounts Committee hearing in February 2010, and to support the Accelerating Stroke Improvement initiative, the Stroke Improvement Programme will be working on the following areas in 2010-11. Further information and learning from the work will be added as projects progress throughout the year.
Improving access to weekend TIA services
To identify different service models, establish the population base for viable services and improve access to appropriate imaging

One month follow up for TIA
To look at current models of provision and identify possible new methods of delivery to explore and identify the who, how and the where.

Access to carotid intervention for TIA
To explore the pathway post diagnosis for timely referral and treatment with carotid intervention, with emphasis on services where vascular surgery is not on site involving inter trust transfers.

Imaging
To capture and promote best practice in delivering the imaging requirements for stroke and TIA services across the UK.

Direct admission to stroke unit
Working with ambulance services and stroke units to develop models for bypassing A&E for stroke patients.

Stroke inter-hospital transfer
Improving patient experience and reducing delays in ‘repatriating’ patients following hyper-acute care.

Provision of 7 day therapy services
To establish the effect of various models of provision of additional therapy services, towards 7 days, on the stroke pathway and patient outcomes.

Delivering 45 minute therapy
To identify models for provision of 45 minutes of therapy and understand the effect on the stroke pathway and patient outcomes.

To work with services working across paediatric care and stroke services to collect and share useful information to connect those with an interest in children and stroke.

Further guidance, ideas and resources for developing and commissioning ESD and community-based rehabilitation services.

Joint care planning
To establish clear guidance for what constitutes joint care planning for stroke and understand the impact of effective joint care planning after stroke.

Reviews
To establish core principles for reviews at six weeks, six months and annually – including who undertakes the review and what it covers.
