National Stroke Data and Audit

SINAP
The Stroke Improvement National Audit Programme (SINAP) is a national audit is funded by the Department of Health and run by the Stroke Programme at the Royal College of Physicians (RCP). The aims of the audit are to:
• describe the pathway followed by patients with acute stroke (in the first three days) in hospital
• assess the quality of care provided to acute stroke patients during the first three days of care
• identify the major areas where services need to be improved for acute stroke patients

National Sentinel Stroke Audit
The Royal College of Physicians (RCP) conduct the National Sentinel Stroke Audit every two years to monitor the rate of progress in stroke care services and includes organisational and clinical components. Round seven is being completed in 2010 for patients admitted between April and June 2010. It is an audit of acute inpatient care of stroke to discharge, the structure of care for inpatients, Early Supported Discharge, community rehabilitation teams and community hospitals stroke patients are transferred to.

UK Carotid Interventions Audit
A Royal College of Physicians (RCP) continuous audit of patients who undergo carotid endarterectomy surgery or stenting to discharge and follow up. Integrated Performance Measures (previously Stroke and TIA Vital Signs)
Integrated Performance measures (previously known as Vital Signs) are published by the Department of Health in the NHS Operating Framework and are measures of progress against national priorities. Integrated performance measures exist for stroke and TIA. Further information about integrated performance measures can be found on the Department of Health website.

The stroke team in The Royal Bournemouth & Christchurch Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust have produced some local guidance to support robust collection of these data, which was developed when it was known as the vital sign.

Updated IPMR guidance was issued on 4th May 2012 to support the collection of the 2012-13 IPMR. The FAQs currently remain as for 2011-12 ad will be updated on this page if amended by the DH.


Care Quality Commission review of services for people who have had a stroke and their carers
This Care Quality Commission (CQC) review took place in the summer of 2010 and was a one-off review of stroke services across the stroke pathway using data collected from PCTs and social services. It comprised mainly of organisational data, but also an analysis of information provided to patients on discharge and a small case file review. The CQC review findings are due to be released December 2010 and will be added here when published.

Safe Implementation of Thrombolysis Stroke (SITS) Database
This is an audit of outcomes from intravenous thrombolysis allowing trust/regions/countries to benchmark outcomes against other centres and countries. It collects data on baseline patient characteristics, details of treatment imaging, complications, neurological improvement (NIHSS baseline 2 hour, 24 hour, 7 days) and 3 month modified Rankin outcome.

Future plans for the audit are to continue contributing to the International Database and encourage centres to enter all patients receiving thrombolysis using at least the simplified dataset, and to extend the database to cover intra-arterial therapies and hemicraniectomy.
