NHS Improvement Delivering tomorrows improvement agenda for the NHS

How to get started

Don’t know where to start?

Have a look at some of our service improvement resources that can help you with your own project. If you are new to improvement work have a look at the Model for Improvement to help you get started and ensure you focus on what you are trying to achieve.

What to do first and showing what you're doing is working

Try the approach demonstrated in our tutorial on using driver diagrams – this takes you through what you need to do, which things could have greatest impact, and what indicators to use to show how much impact you are having.

Understanding what happens now

Don't jump to a solution without first taking the time to fully understand what happens in your existing system. You may be able to make considerable improvements to timeliness, safety and quality of care without major restructuring or tendering.

Process mapping can help you do this - see our introductory guide to using process mapping or contact us for advice.
