About the NHS Lung Improvement Programme
The Lung Improvement Programme provides national support for the local improvement of respiratory services. This covers Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), asthma and home oxygen services. It is an initiative to support the implementation of the National Strategy for COPD Services in England.
As part of NHS Improvement, Lung Improvement aims to support clinical teams, commissioners, service managers and other key stakeholders deliver effective clinical practice through process improvement and redesign.
The team provides a wide range of expertise on how to begin, manage and sustain improvements that benefit patients and staff. Lung Improvement will work closely with the Department of Health, and other organisations working in this area.
Lung Improvement also works in partnership with each Strategic Health Authority (SHA) and the SHA Clinical Leads for Respiratory Care, to coordinate the development of national improvement projects using robust evidence, information management and service improvement and redesign methodologies.
The Lung Improvement Programme’s current priorities are:
- Undertake local projects and testing to inform and accelerate local change
- Support clinical teams and SHA Respiratory Clinical Leads to deliver the National COPD Strategy
- Dovetail with other national priorities such as LTC and QIPP
- Review the feasibility of developing communities of practice and build on existing respiratory networks
- Share information, resources and best practice examples towards delivering high quality respiratory services
Putting patients first...
Patients and carers should be meaningfully involved in the planning, development, delivery and monitoring of services.
Working together...
The challenge is to ensure capability, capacity, and collaborative working… across providers and commissioners so that there is an overall focus on delivery of high-quality respiratory care and services.
Effective networks improve care for patients
Networks encompass the whole patient pathway by connecting different organisations and teams involved along the patients journey, so individuals experience co-ordinated management from the first contact which extends to lifelong support as a patient.
Networks involve patients and carers as active partners in coordinating and supporting service development.
Calling for examples of good and innovative practice…
